Facebook “Collections” Takes on Pinterest

Have you heard? Facebook is launching yet another element to its platform that seems to be a response to Pinterest’s ever-growing visual collage platform. The first testing of Facebook’s “Collections” rolled out through seven major retailers and is meant to work in conjunction with Facebook’s “Gift” feature. Soon, Facebook users will be able to mark album images and page posts with a “Want” or “Collect” (not just “Like”) and let their friends know.

You can give the new feature a test drive by “Liking” Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Victoria’s Secret, Michael Kors, Neiman Marcus, Smith Optics, and Fab.com. Then you may come across product posts that include updated button designations.

From what we’ve heard, so far the service is not fee-based (for retailers), and there is no external plug-in for it yet. However, with Facebook under pressure to increase earnings, I wouldn’t be surprised if more structure is put in place after the full rollout.

You can read more about the new features on TechCrunch.

Have you used Pinterest? Do you often wish you could add things that you see on Facebook to a wish list? Let us know what you think.
